The Scottish Seabird Centre
A unique visitor attraction just a short walk from the Blue Door Flat.
Learn about the seabirds that live along the coast, and zoom in on some of Bass Rock's gannets and Fidra's puffins through the cameras which you can control. Great fun, and very child friendly. To get an even closer view, the trip to Bass rock on 'Sula II' is an unforgettable experience.
Details of sailings can be found on the blackboard near the harbour.

Bass Rock

Castles
Tantallon and Dirleton castles are two of the most impressive castle ruins in Scotland, each with a very different character. Tantallon is perched dramatically on the cliff top with spectacular views out to Bass Rock, whilst Dirleton is set in a pretty conservation village. It has beautiful gardens, with the longest herbaceous border in the country.

Beaches
There are many lovely sandy beaches in the area. North Berwick's Milsey bay is handy at the end of the street for a picnic or a paddle!
Some of our other favourite beaches in the area are:

  • Yellowcraig - A sweep of golden sand with views over the island of Fidra and across to Fife.
  • Seacliff Beach - Just past Tantallon Castle, this is a private beach, but well worth the visit as it is very unspoilt.
  • Tyninghame Beach - a 15-20 minute walk through a lovely wood.
  • Gullane Bents - Good for shells.

Walking
North Berwick Law is well worth the climb for spectacular views of East Lothian, the Lammermuirs, the Firth of Forth and across to Fife. It takes about half an hour to climb from the car park. It has historical interest from iron age forts, to Napoleonic War lookout post.

There is also walking in the Garleton Hills, Yellowcraig, Binning Wood, and the Lammermuir Hills. Guide books and leaflets in the flat provide more details about these places.

Cycling
There are many quiet roads to cycle on, once you turn off the A198. Bikes can be hired from Law Cycles on the High Street.

Golf
Lots of opportunities on a variety of local golf courses.

Tennis
All weather courts are just around the corner from the flat.

Museums
The local museum next to the library is very interesting, with changing exhibitions. The Museum of Flight (4 miles away) includes The Concorde Experience and has a comprehensive selection of airplanes, and flying and space memorabilia. It regularly organises flying exhibitions. The Myreton motor museum at Lufness near Aberlady is worth a visit.

Eating Out
There are lots of local places for lunches, snacks and evening meals.

Edinburgh
In Edinburgh itself there are so many things to see and do, it is impossible to list them all!
